Company registered domains using a proxy service at its own domain name registrar.

Last week I wrote about how Meta, nee Facebook, registered a relatively small number of domains for its rebrand. It turns out the company registered a lot more domains through its own registrar, AppDetex, and did so using a proxy service. It recently removed the privacy protection on the domains.

The domains cover many products and corporate initiatives, such as,,,, and

Meta registered the domains on October 20, at about the same time that the Verge reported that the company was making a name change.

Registering domains with the word meta in them that also contain a Facebook brand is a bad idea. That’s cybersquatting. But I still think the company will have trouble going after other meta-related domains because of its popular and generic use for the metaverse. Usage will matter.
